DSHooper of February: Laura Fisher
Level 2 hoopdancer from Basingstoke
When did you start hoopdancing? & Why did you think it is a
good idea?
I started back at the end of
September in 2009. I decided to start because I wanted a social activity for
week day evenings but one that I could have fun doing and that could help to
make me fitter.
Did you find the beginning easy? Did you ever think you would get
to hoopdance as well as you do now?
The beginning was definitely not easy! I was ready to give up after
the first two sessions because I couldn’t even get the hoop spinning on my
hips never mind doing any other tricks! However something clicked on the
third session and it’s been up hill from there J
Has hoopdance changed anything in your life?
There has only ever been one form of exercise that I have found fun
in my life which was dance. By my third session hooping was on a par with
dancing. I love to have a fun exercise that I can do at home. I do also feel
that I am getting more toned around my waist line which has really spurred me
on to loose weight.
Do you often get frustrated when things do not work with the hoop?
How do you get over that frustration? What motivates you to keep trying?
I do get frustrated because there are some tricks that I can pick up
easily however there are others that it has taken me months to get and even
some that I still can’t do! I’m just persevering and I know that one day
something will click and I will get it. It’s a real buzz to finally get
something that you have worked so hard to achieve.
How much time do you spend hooping?
Hooping is a form of exercise that fits in really easily around a
busy lifestyle. Sometimes I will only be able to get in the odd half an hour
during an evening of the week however other times I can get an hour most
nights and some time at the weekend.
Have you achieved any of your goals that you had before signing up
for the first class? Did you have any expectations?
I haven’t previously had goals apart from to become a little fitter
however I have recently decided that I want to loose a large amount of weight
and I know that Bee will be a great support along the way.
Have you got any favourite moves or any that you particularly
dislike? Any really really frustrating ones?
I’m terrible in that I can never remember the names of the moves! I
really enjoyed learning a move that I think is called the Mandala recently. I
love learning the moves that are on your hands and arms because I seem to
pick these up quickly. I still however find the bunny girl and boy very
frustrating because one of my hips is stronger than the other so I just can’t
seem to get them going properly!
Would you recommend hoopdance to others? What is your advice to
those who are just at the beginning of their hoopdance experience?
I would absolutely recommend hoopdance to others! You are getting a
really good work out but in a fun and enjoyable way. Though it may seem tough
at the beginning and it appears like other people are doing better than you
feel you are, you will find that a move will come up that is perfect for you
yet they might struggle.
My comments: Laura is one of those people who would watch me instruct a move & before I can finish demonstration at all she is already doing it. That is seriously rare! She links moves flawlessly & performs them effortlessly - the start was definitely not too promising but since then she has become one of the very best & mastered more moves in 6 months than the majority in years.
